Overview

WGI is currently seeking a Regional Lead Environmental Scientist with 8-20 years of professional experience to be part of our Environmental team in the Orlando FL office.

 

In this position, you will have the opportunity to lead environmental assessment and permitting on a wide variety of transportation and land development projects. Projects will range in scope and complexity and include transportation, utilities, land development, and environmental restoration. The regional lead environmental scientist will be primarily responsible for the environmental assessment and regulatory permitting of natural resources such as wetlands and protected species habitat and will assist with the assessment of water quality, noise, air, contamination, native trees, and other natural and physical resources.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, planners, surveyors, construction contractors, and others to avoid or minimize regulated environmental impacts and develop a viable permitting strategy
  • With the support of other senior-level staff, lead the environmental permitting on transportation, utilities, land development, and environmental restoration projects
  • Direct wetland delineations, tree inventories, habitat mapping, listed species surveys, gopher tortoise relocations, seagrass surveys, mangrove assessments, NEPA documentation, construction compliance, and other miscellaneous environmental services.
  • Represent clients in meetings with environmental regulatory agencies
  • Assist with business development, preparing project scope and fees, and participating in presentations and negotiations for contract pursuits.
  • Supervise entry-level and mid-level environmental scientists

Qualifications

  • B.S. required or M.S. in Biology, Environmental Science, or other Natural Science preferred.
  • 8-20 years of relevant work experience required
  • Knowledge of Florida and Federal permitting rules
  • Prior experience with regulatory agencies (FDEP, water management districts, USACE)
  • Prior experience with permitting FDOT transportation projects preferred; PD&E experience a plus
  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with Florida fauna and flora
  • Ability to delineate wetlands and a PWS (Professional Wetlands Scientist) certification preferred
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis. We are unable to sponsor or take over the sponsorship of employment visa.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Most work is performed in an office setting. Field work such as wetland delineations and wildlife surveys will be required occasionally. Field conditions can be difficult due to heat, thick vegetation, steep or swampy terrain, insects, animals, and other field conditions typical of Florida and the region.
